Tavira - "Slow City".

Old fishing boats gently slide in the river running through Tavira. This is the soul of Tavira, a city where we still feel old times breath in spite of the Tourism.

Hence the city being pioneer in the new concept of “Slow City” that aims at keeping small cities attractive for those seeking quietness, no stress, hospitality and good quality gastronomy.

Situated in both margins of the Gilão River, connected by a bridge of Roman origin, Tavira has plenty of historical churches (totalling 37) and everyplace is at walking distance.

Close by, Tavira Island offers 11 kms of some of the best beaches* in the region; it is within the natural reserve of Ria Formosa and has become well known to marine bird watchers. Access is done by boat and is the perfect place for swimming. The Festival Organization provides free boat transportation to and from the island.

*Surrounding Beaches

Ilha de Tavira ( Tavira Island) -700 meters of white sand and pleasant water temperature. The beach is under concession to a Company called A Vida é Bela (Life is Beautiful) and they assure they can make your dreams come true!

Cabana -well known beach with good turistic support while staying relatively quiet. São João da Barra Fortress signals the entrance to the small harbour.

Conceição -facing the village with the same name, is a long, quiet and isolated beach with access by boat. The main church (Igreja Matriz) with its gothic style deserves a visit.

Barril-even longer beach with areas that can be busy and areas that are quiet. Good turistic support adapted from an old tuna factory.
